I had to hunt a little to find Don's Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers in the deli/dairy fridge aisle, but let me tell you - IT WAS WORTH IT.
In the package, some packs looked a little 'blah' in colour. Not the nice pink you'd expect in bacon rasher. I pulled the box down and rifled through it. The newest, freshest packs were in the back (as per usual) and had that lovely, light pink shade we know means the bacon will be good.
I used the bacon that night in our dinner. Opening the pack was easy, quick slice with the knife and you're in. The smell immediately took me back to my Granny's kitchen on the farm where they slaughtered their own meats. That fresh smell that makes your mouth water.
Each slice was uniform in colour, texture, cut, amount of fat and shape. It sliced easily (as required for my recipe).
Once in the pan, it cooked evenly. I can't speak as to how it would cook whole for, say, breakfast with eggs, etc but, diced it curled delightfully and I was able to get it to cook exactly as I wanted.
The taste, purely from the look on my family's faces, was delicious. Even my pickiest eater told me it was, "the yummiest bacon EVER!!!" And I have to agree. It tasted wonderful. I've not been a pre-packaged smallgoods fan - but this bacon is well worth a go.
At $6.00 for 200g - yes, it's on the higher end of the budget and it's going to break the bank if you are feeding two adults and a few kids. If you need just a small amount of bacon or you're making breakfast for one or two people, buy it.
Seriously, just buy it.
Any recipe calling for short bacon.
One or two people - might get expensive for a family.
Cook your favourite person person a delicious bacon breakfast.
