Tasted Great With Less Preservatives!

This was my first Trial Team and I couldn't have been on a better one for me! My family eats bacon at least twice a week and so we are always trying new kinds. We had never used Don before in our house so I was quite interested to see how this was going to go. Well it went great! I was so happy with the way it cooked, it was easy to get just right. Once I sat down to try it i could immediately smell the quality! It smelt like real, pure bacon, not like some of that stuff that is pumped with hormones. It tasted delicious, it was a really good cut and I was really happy with it. I will definitely be buying Don in the future to satisfy my family's bacon needs and I'd be really interested in trying some more of their products. If you're yet to try, please do go and give it a go! I loved it!!

I love that Don have taken the initiative to remove unnecessary and harmful additives from our beloved bacon. The all natural shortcut bacon tastes great and doesn’t have unnecessary wastage from excess fat. The package is handy for trips away as it is well sealed. Unfortunately unless it is on sale it is not well priced for family consumption, especially in cooking. It was just enough to feed my small family of three when consumed in bacon and egg rolls for a Sunday breakfast. I’m very disappointed that the pork is imported, I’d love to see Don do more to advocate for the government to support pork producers here in Australia. There would be no shortage of Australian pork if the authorities didn’t keep shutting down piggeries. Beef and sheep farmers don’t face the same problems and as Australian’s we should be aware of the red tape our farmers face that prevent us from eating the best produce possible.
Ideal For?:
Everyone, we should all avoid nitrites where possible

I am quite pleased to receive a trial invite for this item as I love bacon but not the bad ingredients that comes with it. I usually like a little bit of fat on my bacon but the short cut is a healthier version. The product is quite easy to find at the supermarket and the packaging is attractive and simple. I like looking at the ingredients list to see if what the product is claming is true and I'm quite pleased with this one. I do find that the cut is too thin to my liking but it's easy to cook. It's not as flavourful as the regular bacon but it's to be expected as it doesn't have the additives and I'm okay with it. The price is a bit more costly compared to the bacon you can get from the butcher but the quality is good so still a win/win.

Nice and lean

This was the perfect size for Sunday bacon and eggs breakfast and didn't have to deal with leftovers since I generally don't have time to make a proper breakfast during the week. It comes in a plastic tray which was easier to open and deal with than a vacuum sealed bag. I was able to leave it in the tray without any drips unlike bacon in just plastic which needs a plate. The bacon was pretty lean and didn't have excess gristle or fatty bits hanging off the side that needed trimming. The slices were a nice thickness and the bacon didn't get dry or tough once cooked despite how lean it was but the edges were still crispy. It had the right amount of salt but I prefer a smokier flavour but it's nice to know there's a healthier option.

Thanks for receiving this to review. I cooked this in a couple of ways to see how it went. Pan fried (the timing was not good for cooking it on a bbq like I normally would) gave a nice tasting fairly crispy bacon, not too much water came out which is always good. My mine gripe would be that it curled so that I ended up with uneven cooking, I don't really want to have to cut rashers to ensure they stay flat all the time, I don't think it would be such an issue when cooking on a bbq. It was very satisfying in a bacon buttie! Not surprisingly the bacon tasted 'bacony'! A bit smoky but not heavily salted and good if you don't like a strong tasting bacon. My husband used some of it in a risotto and it gave a nice subtle taste to that too so it is a good bacon to use in cooking when it's added for flavour not as the main ingredient. However I would definitely buy it to fry or bbq as that its bacon's role in life. The product claims it is 'gluten-free' but (apart from cross-contamination) it would be very unlikely that any bacon has gluten, I don't know if they are guaranteeing that there is no gluten - most products say 'may contain traces of gluten' to cover themselves. If it is guaranteed then it would be good for anyone that can't have any trace of gluten at all. It is also 'naturally low in nitrites' but that doesn't actually tell you anything. On the good side it does claim to have no artificial ingredients. Although it is 'made in australia' it is said to contain 'at least 10% Australian ingredients' - I would hope that something that is mainly meat would have a much higher Australian content, does this mean that the meat is from overseas and the 'extras' are Australian? So tastewise it's definitely a winner, pricewise it is a little costly compared to bacon from the deli counter or other brands of prepackaged bacon, and as far as those nutrition claims go I think they are a little vague. I threw the packaging away so I've got this information from the website, it is possible the packaging contained more information.
Ideal For?:
general cooking but best for sunday breakfast
Any Tips?:
If gluten is a big issue for you and you can get them to guarantee it's free from gluten then this would be ideal for you.

First up, a big thank you to Trial Team and Don Smallgoods for asking me to be part of this trial. We are a keen bacon eating family- it's a rare week when there isn't a packet of bacon in the fridge. The Don Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon rashers were easy to find in the local supermarket. Being short cut, there is no waste. But I was really pleased to see that they didn't dry out at all during cooking, as can sometimes happen with short cut rashers. The rashers themselves were a medium thickness- certainly not paper thin and leaving you wanting more, or falling apart while cooking. I used the bacon in a quiche, and fried up a couple of rashers as part of a cooked breakfast. Whether on their own, or as part of a bigger recipe, the bacon was flavorsome and yum! Will happily purchase again in the future!
Ideal For?:
All types of cooking

I do love bacon but limit my intake as it is highly processed and a manufactured meat - I rarely cook it at home. Intrigued to try this bacon with 60% total nitrates in comparison to other bacon products as well as having no artificial flavours colours or preservatives. It’s located in the refrigerated dairy/deli section of the supermarket and well packaged. I think there were 8 or 9 short cut rindless rashes. I prefer purchasing the short cut rindless type, as even though it’s more expensive, there is no wastage and no fat to be removed prior to cooking - although not a fan of the packaging that’s thrown out! My usual cooking method is in a small amount of oil in a non stick frypan on the cooktop. The bacon cooked quickly and with very minimal amount of fat, there was no spitting and spattering of oil. Portion size is good with little shrinkage. Taste was great - good level of saltiness and I wouldn’t have noticed any difference to the normal bacon I’d buy - tastier in fact with far less fat. It was a hit with all the family and I will definitely be purchasing this in the future.

Thank you TT for the opportunity to trial this product. My first impression was that it reminded me of ham in the texture. I chopped it up to use in a meal and it felt like slicing ham. Where regular bacon has a firmer texture, this was softer and slightly stringy. It cooks well, and has a great flavour. Again, not like regular bacon, but still very tasty. Overall I’m very impressed with this product, and it’s a great option for families with children. My 3 yr old daughter loves bacon but I hesitate to give it to her very often because of the nitrites. This is a great alternative for her and I wouldn’t hesitate to use it more often. I would love to see it in a value pack though, as it’s probably not much to feed a whole family. I highly recommend this product and will definitely be repurchasing it.
Ideal For?:
Anyone that is conscious of their family’s health but loves bacon!

Is it wrong that I was super excited to try this new bacon!?! All jokes aside, the Don Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers are delicious! I was very interested in this product as it claims to be bacon that is lower in nitrates, does not contain any artificial ingredients, is gluten free and "better for you". The taste of the bacon was great, not too salty, not slimy as some packet bacon can be, and it also felt lighter, softer and pleasant to eat. Some bacon can be tough, chewy and have a strange metallic sheen to it but this Don's bacon was a nice pinkish natural colour, felt very soft, not tough and melted easily in the mouth when consumed and with absolutely no chewiness at all. I cooked this bacon in many ways to test the taste and quality including homemade pizzas, a pasta sauce along with traditional bacon and eggs. The flavour of the Don's All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers was fantastic in all dishes with all being enjoyed. It was not an overpowering bacon flavour, but an enjoyable mild bacon taste. One good point to mention about this bacon was that it remained flat in the pan when cooked over a low to medium heat meaning it maintained its shape and didn't curl up into nothing. Each rasher of bacon had very minimal fat content but just enough to stop the bacon from being very dry when cooked and consumed as some short rashers can be very dry to eat. Overall I highly recommend the Don Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers to everyone. The only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the packet only containing 6 rashers which is quite frankly, not enough.
Ideal For?:
Everyone!!
Any Tips?:
Bacon is best cooked over a low to medium heat slowly and with patience so as to not burn the bacon or toughen the meat.
Can alternatively be cooked in an airfyer and/or an oven. An oven works well to keep the bacon flat.

Delicious, Classic Bacon!

The DON All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers come in a 200g package that features a rustic designed, easy to read label that makes it easy to identify the type of bacon you’re looking for. I really appreciate that the label isn’t across the whole packaging as the clear window allows you to make sure your bacon looks fresh. It’s great to see that this bacon contains all natural ingredients. My 200g package contained 7 slices of bacon, all well cut and having the same thickness – not too thin where it would overly crisp but not too thick where it would take long to cook. The rindless rashers are a great size and a slice or two is all you really need for a sandwich. The thin section of fat on top of the bacon not only adds flavour but also keeps the slices moist when cooking. I tried using the bacon in a number of ways – in a sandwich, in a creamy bacon and mushroom pasta and the classic bacon and egg breakfast. Each time, the bacon came out really delicious and not too salty, which is an issue I’ve found with some other bacon rashers. It has a classic, bacon taste – nothing exciting but very reliable. Even with some colour, the bacon didn’t dry out after cooking. The bacon does crisp up nicely if you’re looking for that finish, though it does require a bit more cooking. Overall, the DON All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers are really nice and fresh, have a great classic bacon taste and really versatile to cook with. I would definitely repurchase.

I love bacon and will never turn down an egg and bacon combo! Was excited to trial the Dons Smallgoods All Natural Shortcut bacon. These were easy to find at my local Woolworths fridge section with the other assortment of deli meats, cheeses and yoghurts. This pack was good value for money with a weight size of 200grams (approximately 10 rashers) or 4 servings as the pack suggests. These rashers are short cut so you get the bacon itself with most of the fat trimmed off so it's a healthier version. This is a great size for an egg and bacon roll! This doesn't contain any artificial ingredients, is low in nitrates and is gluten free. To be used within 5 days after opening to ensure freshness. What these rashers omit or have reduced it doesn't lack for taste! They're so delicious! I love the convenience of them. It's so quick to pop them in a pan, crack an egg and put together in a roll. Hubby has enjoyed his egg and bacon combo on the way to work. I've enjoyed them with some smashed avo and poached eggs! You could wrap them around a chicken fillet, dice them for spice up a spud! You're only limited by your imagination! I will be buying these again. Thank you Don and Trial Team!

Thank you Trial Team for giving me the opportunity to trial the Don All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers. To obtain the product I was sent an e-voucher which was used to ‘purchase’ the bacon from Woolworths. I found it very easy to identify the product on the shelf in the small goods section of the store, and I was able to use the e-voucher quite successfully at the self-serve checkout. The bacon is packaged in a see through plastic tray style packet with a peel-back top for easy opening. The packaging is clearly labelled and the bacon can be easily seen. The bacon looked very lean and my pack contained 8 juicy pieces of bacon. I decided to make some bacon on toast for my husband and I so we could appreciate the bacon without an overload of flavours from other food. I placed the bacon in a non-stick pan and gently cooked it on the gas stove for a few minutes until some colour formed on both sides of the bacon. The bacon was of a medium cut – not too thin or thick. Again I noticed how lean the bacon appeared with just a hint of fat around the edge so I was very aware to not over-cook the bacon in case it dried out. I presented hubby with his bacon on toast and although he knew we were trialing the bacon I didn’t explain to him what was supposedly different about the bacon, and I actually didn’t expect to get any immediate feedback from him. I was quite surprised after a couple of mouthfuls when he said “this is really nice. It’s not at all salty but has almost a sweet taste”. When I started eating my meal I realised his description was spot on. I found the bacon to be extremely lean, didn’t dry out when I cooked it, wasn’t at all salty and didn’t leave me needing to drink glasses of water afterwards which is usually what I have to do after eating bacon. I would have no hesitation in purchasing this product because I consider the Don All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers to be a delicious, healthy bacon.
Ideal For?:
anyone who wants to enjoy bacon without that over-salty taste.

I don’t eat a lot of bacon but this was probably some of the best bacon I’ve eaten. With very little extra fat to cut off, and conveniently ready to cook, this bacon cooked super quickly, and didn’t exude a lot of grease. I was very glad to find a bacon free from nitrates and artificial colourings and flavourings - much better for my family, but what really sets this bacon apart is the taste. It takes good - not super salty or oily - just juicy and flavoursome. Because it cooks quickly you don’t have to burn it to a crisp - it just takes like good, old fashioned bacon - and also goes really well in dishes like carbonara. Although we don’t have an issue with gluten in my house, I have family members who have issues with gluten, so it’s good to know that this product is suitable for people who struggle with gluten intolerance. The price is very reasonable too - and it’s readily available in supermarkets. All in all, I’d say that, for those who eat bacon, this is a winner.
Ideal For?:
This bacon is ideal for anyone who wants a healthier bacon without all the icky stuff it usually contains and who is keen to have a bacon that tastes great. In my house, bacon is back on the menu.
Any Tips?:
There’s no need to overcook this product - 10 mins on medium heat with another 5 on the flip side worked perfectly for me. A BBQ would be even faster - don’t burn it! Otherwise you won’t get the slightly sweet, juicy flavour coming through.

Bacon is a staple in our low-carb home and this is delicious

When I received the invitation to be a part of the Don Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon rasher trial I was in heaven. Over the last 12 months I have completely changed my diet and have adopted the low-carb way of living and bacon features heavily in my diet. I know - hard to believe that something so delicious could be considered in a diet of any kind! I have tried my fair share of bacon over the last 12 months and I am seriously impressed with the flavour of this option. I always cook my bacon in a cold pan as this helps to render the fat and to create a better crispy finish and short cuts are my favourite type to use as I can fit more in the pan. I regularly use bacon for lunch and have used this in my zucchini slice as well as my staple bacon and eggs for breakfast. The whole family love the flavour and it will be included on my shopping list as my preferred option from now on.
Ideal For?:
Bacon lovers young and old alike!

I had to hunt a little to find Don's Smallgoods All Natural Short Cut Bacon Rashers in the deli/dairy fridge aisle, but let me tell you - IT WAS WORTH IT. In the package, some packs looked a little 'blah' in colour. Not the nice pink you'd expect in bacon rasher. I pulled the box down and rifled through it. The newest, freshest packs were in the back (as per usual) and had that lovely, light pink shade we know means the bacon will be good. I used the bacon that night in our dinner. Opening the pack was easy, quick slice with the knife and you're in. The smell immediately took me back to my Granny's kitchen on the farm where they slaughtered their own meats. That fresh smell that makes your mouth water. Each slice was uniform in colour, texture, cut, amount of fat and shape. It sliced easily (as required for my recipe). Once in the pan, it cooked evenly. I can't speak as to how it would cook whole for, say, breakfast with eggs, etc but, diced it curled delightfully and I was able to get it to cook exactly as I wanted. The taste, purely from the look on my family's faces, was delicious. Even my pickiest eater told me it was, "the yummiest bacon EVER!!!" And I have to agree. It tasted wonderful. I've not been a pre-packaged smallgoods fan - but this bacon is well worth a go. At $6.00 for 200g - yes, it's on the higher end of the budget and it's going to break the bank if you are feeding two adults and a few kids. If you need just a small amount of bacon or you're making breakfast for one or two people, buy it. Seriously, just buy it.
Ideal For?:
Any recipe calling for short bacon.
One or two people - might get expensive for a family.
Any Tips?:
Cook your favourite person person a delicious bacon breakfast.

Having had no success buying this product at Woolworths (having gone to four stores nearby my home) and finding it at Coles right away; the time had beckoned to get cooking again. It is so easy to eat out all the time while living in town, and how appropriate to enjoy with some scrambled eggs. On the first occasion I cooked and enjoyed this bacon rasher product was with my partner. He did not mind, yet I enjoyed the taste with some scrambled eggs, after each rasher was cooked with coconut oil. The sauce was way special in a small way. Definitely not the BBQ or tomato sauce type. These rashers were actually nice with a small squeeze of some lemon aioli on a wholemeal gluten free bun. One and a half pieces made it in a sandwich. You can easily cook three at a time in a standard cooktop pan. Thankfully there were a few pieces left, as I enjoyed cooking two rashers (again in coconut oil) in the middle of the night waking up with hunger pains. Loved eating them piping hot without anything else. Now there are just two slices left after reading this. Definitely on the tasty side, yet personally I don't think these rashers (as a whole in terms of satiety) are not great value.
Ideal For?:
Those foodies who love their bacon and egg rolls, and are into Gluten Free eating.
If you're craving some bacon.
Any Tips?:
Cook three at a time. Great cooking with coconut oil. Cook until they start to become a little brown on the edges.

Tasty value for money

I found the pack to be a good suitable for a family weekend breakfast, or for a few individual meals. The bacon was all evenly cut with a small ring of fat. It cooked pretty fast but even on low heat it seemed to be starting to burn a little bit instead of crisping up, this is probably due to the fact that this cut has lower fat than we are use to cooking, we usually choose a middle rasher cut. I found the bacon itself to have a very full ham flavour with a lingering aftertaste. I would have prefered a slightly thicker cut as the pieces did shrink significantly. The only other negative was for a cut with limited fat there did seem to be a large amount of fat left in the pan, so given that the package says "better for you" it's hard to believe that claim. Overall though the bacon itself was very tasty and for the price and quality I think it's a good value buy and I would certainly purchase again.
Ideal For?:
A family breakfast on a week or for a few meals for one or two people. It would go great on a sandwich or burger, bacon, lettuce and tomato on toast would be a great lunch treat.
Any Tips?:
Use a good non stick pan and don't add any extra oil and cook on medium to low heat.

DON ALL NATURAL Short Cut Bacon Rashers are now a must have on my shopping list each week. I was so excited to try these. I love bacon rashers that are short cut, they are my favourite type of bacon. These DON rashers are excellent, they are trim and lean, a good thickness, which is great as you can use them in salads, pasta or for bacon and eggs. I used some rashers for bacon and eggs and some for a chicken caesar salad. They cooked up well, coloured well and were nice and crispy. They tasted really nice. The pack is a good size and will last a couple of uses which is really good, especially if you do love your bacon like me. I will definitely be buying these weekly from now, I love the taste, the size, the quality and the pack size. The bacon is delicious and tasted fantastic in both dishes I made. The bacon is really natural in colour and flavour. My husband loved these too, and loved the meals I cooked, he said the bacon made them so much better.
Ideal For?:
Everyone, I love short cut rashers as they taste better and are easier to use
Any Tips?:
Great for salads, pasta and bacon and eggs, the bacon is the perfect size for every dish
